UnionPay International expands UnionPay card acceptance to Canadian merchants
UnionPay International and Moneris Solutions Corporation (“Moneris”), one of North America’s largest providers of payment processing solutions, held a joint ceremony at Brooks Brothers’ Toronto flagship on April 20, 2015, celebrating the recent signings of Moneris merchants who can now offer UnionPay card (card numbers starting with 62) acceptance to UnionPay cardholders in Canada for travelling, study, living and business. Cai Jianbo, CEO of UnionPay International, Jeff Guthrie, Moneris’ Chief Sales and Relationship Officer, and Rob Cameron, Moneris’ Chief Product and Marketing Officer attended the ceremony, adding Brooks Brothers to the roster of significant merchants in Canada that can now accept UnionPay cards as a form of payment.
By the end of last year, Moneris enabled UnionPay card acceptance at thousands of merchant locations in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and other major Canadian cities, covering mainly retail, tourism, entertainment and other industries supported by Chinese tourists and local residents. In the future, UnionPay International will enhance its partnership with Moneris to include online payment and contactless payment acceptance.
Cai Jianbo said, “As the overseas UnionPay card acceptance footprint expands and services improve, UnionPay has become the preferred payment service provider of Chinese outbound tourists. In the meantime, UnionPay cards have been issued in over 40 countries and regions and are welcomed by the local markets. UnionPay cards are bringing overseas merchants with more and more consumers from China, Asia and other parts of the world. We will accelerate the construction of the global UnionPay acceptance network and proactively make innovations in payment products and channels to provide cardholders with more convenient and efficient services and card-using experiences.”
According to Jeff Guthrie, “UnionPay International is a very important Moneris partner. UnionPay card acceptance helps Moneris merchants address the needs of Chinese visitors to Canada. Moneris is working closely with UnionPay to expand the number of Canadian locations within our merchant base that can accept UnionPay cards to help these businesses differentiate their services, while providing tourists and visitors from China with a familiar and convenient payment method.”
According to public data, Canada is a destination favored by Chinese people with more than 500,000 Chinese visited the country for travel, family visit or business last year. Meanwhile, China has become the largest source country for foreign students studying in Canada, with around 100,000 Chinese students studying or living in the country.
Currently, UnionPay cards can be used to withdraw cash in 85% of ATMs and make purchases at nearly 20,000 merchants in Canada, including airport duty free shops in Vancouver and Toronto as well as jewelry stores, gift shops, souvenir shops, local specialty shops and other places frequently visited by tourists. In addition, UnionPay cards are also accepted in chain department stores including Holt Renfrew and Harry Rosen, and 80% of high-end brand stores at the shopping districts in downtown Vancouver.
